Weekly Update - January 30, 2021

Monty Hopkins

Hello MAST Families,

February Practice Schedule will be posted in a second update.  Due to various factors the MAST swim practice schedule changes a lot this month.  We tried to have as many practices as possible for all groups while at the same time attempting to be as consistent as possible.  Make sure to check the second post today for the February practice schedule.

High School Championships begin this week and we would like to wish all MAST affiliated high school swimmers the very best and hope you all have tremenbous individual and team success. High School Sectionals are February 5 & 6 in multiple locations. If swimmers qualify for the District Championship, that meet will be February 19 & 20 at Miami University.  The District meet is where swimmers qualify for the State Championship meet.  State meet is February 26 & 27 at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, OH.

Please welcome Erin New to the coaching staff. Erin is a former competitive swimmer with 17+ years of swimming experience.  Originally from Bremen, IN, she now lives in Milford with her husband and 2 daughters.  Erin swam 4 years for DePauw University, earning All- Conference honors every year and serving as team captain senior year. She has experience coaching age group at the Bremen Swim Team. Erin will be primarily coaching the Red Groups but may be on deck with Black Groups too.

Practice Attendance:  Screen Writer, Director and Actor Woody Allen once said that "Eighty Percent of Success is Showing Up."  It's hard to know if that is really true, but one thing for certain in swimming is that you have to get in the water and work hard if you want to swim fast.  Since getting in can't happen if you don't show up, maybe Woody is on to something. There is no question that in a sport like swimming where athletes must train in water while holding their breath and staying afloat that "repetition in the mother of skill."  To acquire the special skills needed to improve as a competitive swimmer, there can be no doubt that "showing up" is, in fact, a major contributor to success.

Using the 80% attendance standard the following swimmers are recognized for attending 80% or more of the MAST practices the last two weeks:

Adie New, Patrick Davisson, Jacob Eminger, Lucia Miramonti, Ellyanne Gammel, Nick Wedick, Teo Carrion, Patrick Eminger, Owen Hein, Jonah Otten, Lila Sager, Jake Nerl, Kendall Chapman, Emmett Fentress, Erin Fentress, Evan Fentress, Paul Menker & Sophia Otten,

A very special shout out to those swimmers who achieved 100% Attendance at MAST practices the last two weeks.  These swimmers are:

Elle Campbell, Dylan Chapman, Gracelyn Morris, Demi Harris and Taylor Wethington.

As we close in on the end of the winter short course season, everyone should make an extra effort to attend as many MAST practices as possible.

Ohio LSC Virtual Championships March 12-14 will be swum at numerous locations throughout the state and results of every separate meet will be combined to create our 2021 State Championship results for the "B", "A" and "AA" Championships.  MAST will be hosting one of the meets with the tentative date for the meet as March 12-14.  All teams in the Ohio LSC are still working on the details of these meets.  More information will be available soon.  All of our swimmers have been working hard to improve this winter season and we strongly encourageeveryone to participate in the upcoming Ohio Championship Virtual Championship meet.

Have a safe evening and an enjoyable weekend,

Monty
